PRIYANKA CHOPRA'S STAR IS BLINDING AS SHE TAKES ON THE GLOBE AND LEADS THE PACK AT HOME
“It was miserable!” Priyanka Chopra announces in that should-be-trademarked Indian-Anglo–accented husky voice. “It was brutally cold and apparently winter’s not even here yet, but we braved it and did lots of pull-ups and push-ups in the rain.”
The “globalisation of popular culture” is a mouthful, and it’s a theme that has doubtless inspired a million high-minded essays. But know that its most perfect manifestation may be ABC’s Quantico, one of three breakout hits on American TV this season (along with Blindspot andSupergirl), which not incidentally features the ravishing 33-year-old Chopra as a driven FBI recruit going through basic training at the bureau’s academy in Quantico, Virginia — and which is filmed, for reasons of network economy, in chilly Montreal. Her character, we learn in an elaborate nine-month-later flash-forward sequence in the pilot, is also being framed for the inside-job bombing of Grand Central Station. The show is, to be sure, OTT: watch her character, Alex Parrish, kick ass in hand-to-hand combat, and bed the cute guy with whom she shares a dorm bathroom, and elude capture with a bag of high-tech counterintelligence tricks, all in about five minutes’ worth of small-screen jump cuts. But it’s intensely watchable, thanks to Chopra, who radiates megacharisma (the show’s “strongest human asset,” according to The New York Times) and whose well-toned physique looks as natural doing trainee calisthenics as it does moving through the elegant gyrations of Bajirao Mastani.
“It’s popcorn television,” she breezily says of Quantico, which returns from hiatus this month. “And I’m a big fan of pop entertainment — I watch Castle! I believe as an actor I can create anything into my own form of art.” She would know. In the last 15 years, Chopra, the daughter of Army physicians, has evolved from Miss World to Miss World Domination. After some 50 films — in which she’s played, among other roles, an autistic woman (Barfi!, 2012), a boxer (Mary Kom, 2014) and a tough cop in this month’s Jai Gangaajal — Chopra draws audiences not only in India but throughout Southeast Asia, the UK, Australia, Germany and Canada. That economic clout has allowed her to launch her own company, Purple Pebble Productions, and create a foundation that ensures that the children of her 200-plus employees receive health care and an education if their parents can’t afford it. “Hard work can never be denied,” is how she describes her philosophy, with the kicker, “unless you’re, like, a bungling fool.”
All of which is to say that when American television began to assiduously court her two years ago, she was “a little skeptical”. Chopra was one of those fortunate few for whom accepting a lead role on a network TV show meant a significant pay cut. And to the degree that she had a coherent plan to take on the West, music was supposed to be her beachhead: she signed a deal with Interscope Records that to date has translated into a couple of singles, including a semi-autobiographical duet with Pitbull titled ‘Exotic’ (per his rapped lyrics, “Bollywood to Hollywood, it’s all about the money”). Instead, ABC sold her on Quantico, a project she picked from the 26 that the network dangled before her. She dazzled in the pilot, ABC got another diversity feather in its cap (see Black-ish, Dr. Ken and How To Get Away With Murder), and this Bollywood superstar just bought herself nine months of the year shooting in mostly cold weather. “I do love a challenge,” she says, explaining the logic. “It’s my folly, and it will be my downfall someday.” Consider the notorious 14-hour-a-day shooting schedule common to hour-long dramas as TV’s own form of boot camp. “It’s a beast,” Chopra says. “I did freak out a little bit at first.” (For those first few months, she’d fly back to India on the weekends to finish Bajirao Mastani.)
The pace exacts a price; for instance, in the romantic department. As breathlessly chronicled in the tabloids, over the years Chopra has been involved with at least two of her co-stars, but she’s currently single. “Why should a woman have to pick between global domination and having the love of her life?” she asks rhetorically, if wistfully.
Still, she’s determined to carry an American TV show and maintain a workload back home, shuttling back and forth the way Sophia Loren did between Hollywood and Rome, a comparison that doesn’t displease her. “Exactly,” she says. “It’s about getting on a 16-hour flight, reading a book, and arriving.” Smitten American colleagues can’t help but project. Says Josh Hopkins, late of Cougar Town and now her FBI handler on Quantico, “The other day I was doing a scene with her, and I had this realisation that I’m going to be buying tickets to see her in Hollywood movies for years to come. She’s just got it.”
Does your friendship match up to that of Shah Rukh
“We are comfortable in our own skin, we have never tried to outdo each other. I think we know that our individual scenes in a film are fantastic, but together we are unbeatable,” Shah Rukh Khan once toldVogue India about Kajol.
Back together on the silver screen for Dilwale this December, the actors are more than just co-stars. The Bollywood buddies have a whole lot of history, having worked together in six films since 1993, including classics Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (which completed 1,000 weeks in theatres earlier this year), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), and most recently, My Name is Khan (2010).
The secret behind the duo’s never-fading on-screen chemistry: their super-strong off-screen friendship. Scroll through these pictures of them from Vogue India, walking red carpets around the world, and meeting their fans, and you’ll realise they always (always!) have a blast together. It’s always a celebration when the two meet, and when they’re not cracking inside jokes, they’re busy imitating each other, play-fighting and hugging their way through each event.
Naina Bachchan and Kunal Kapoor’s grand wedding reception
Naina Bachchan and Kunal Kapoor’s grand wedding reception
When it comes to families scrutinized under the public eye as persistently as the Bachchans, secret getaways (think Rani Mukerji's Italy elopement) and low key celebrations seem like the trend.
Away from the paparazzi and fans, and in a private ceremony on the Seychelles islands, investment banker Naina Bachchan, daughter of Ajitabh Bachchan (Amitabh Bachchan's younger brother) tied the knot with actor Kunal Kapoor on February 9, 2015.
Having returned home, the happy couple continued the celebrations with family and friends with a private reception held in Delhi this weekend at Amaanta Farms in Kapashera, a lush 6,5000 sq ft garden. And as you'd expect, the two-day celebration (a dinner on April 10 at Dusit Devrana, followed by the wedding reception on April 11) was attended by a host of Bollywood stars, designers and politicians.
Joining Aishwarya, Abhishek, Jaya, Amitabh and Shweta Bachchan were Hrithik Roshan, Anupam and Kirron Kher, Rahul Bose, Rinki Khanna and Poonam Dhillon. From the fashion front, attendees included Dior's Kalyani Saha and designers Suneet Varma, Gaurav Gupta, Varun Bahl, Ritu Kumar, Anupama Dayala, Rina Dhaka and Ritu Beri. Shobha De, Queenie Singh and Niamat Bakshi were among severel others who made sure to stop by and congratulate the couple. Highlights of the evening included a musical performance by the Meet Brothers (which Abhishek Bachchan jumped into as well), Shweta Nanda hitting the dancefloor with daughter Navya Naveli, and the newlyweds taking a quick selfie on stage with Anupam Kher.
Putting together the event along with J & S Event Planners, designer Rohit Bal has validated every arguement for the opulent, big Indian wedding. Done in signature maroons, crimsons and baroque details, the reception's decor by Rohit Bal Luxury Weddings and Events was in tune with the statement classic vibe you'd expect from a Bollywood celebration—and a Bachchan one at that.
Kareena Kapoor’s complete beauty transformation
Kareena Kapoor’s complete beauty transformation
An ethereal glow, those piercingly dark rimmed eyes, and perfectly moulded features—Kareena Kapoor Khan’s the kind of star whose beauty can be defined in many words, yet none will do it justice. As you’ll see in these pictures, over the years she’s grown from a baby-faced girl-next-door to the enviable queen of Bollywood, matching her royal status with sharp, polished looks.
Looking back, in 2011 and 2012 she was big on high-shine lips—think glossy pinks and peaches—that she paired with equally slick, lustrous hair, mostly worn loose. Then there was that phase of sleek ponytails and the year she made the kohl-rimmed eyes her signature—2013. Through it all, intense eyes and nude lips remained her favourite.
By the end of 2013 and in the course of 2014, the hair got bigger, and the lips got more colour. But it was in 2015 when all the elements of her look became more accentuated—those beautiful high cheeks got more chiselled, the eyes more defined, the hair’s natural movement more emphasised. Basically, she upped the ante on her own beauty game.
Here’s looking at Vogue India’s December 2015 cover star, Kareena Kapoor Khan’s beauty transformation.

People of Rajasthan not only know how to celebrate life, they actually put in a lot of heart in their festivals which makes the charm of their celebrations distinct. In contrast to the way the festival is celebrated across India and around the globe, Holi in Rajasthan is celebrated differently with lots of other aspects and rituals involved which makes the festival look much more colorful and impressive.
Braj Mahotsav
The festival is celebrated in the honor of Lord Krishna, and falls few days before Holi. The festival is celebrated for three days in the Braj region, which is situated in the Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. The area in and around the Braj is believed to be the region where Lord Krishna spent his childhood, playing pranks and showing many aspects of His transcendental activities. Local people don multi-colored, vibrant attires and celebrate by singing and dancing and emulating Raslila, depicting the divine love between Radha and Krishna.

The spectacle is worth seeing and generates a lot of enthusiasm. This special way of celebrating Holi, brings the people in the local community together in the spirit of unity and brotherhood.
Gair at Godaji
Celebrated few days after Holi, this occasion is marked with the gathering of men from 12 distinct villages in the Godaji Village, located near theAjmer, to play Gair. Each village presents itself with their own drummers and troupes.
Surrounded by picturesque sights all over, the occasion is attended by thousands of audience and onlookers, who revel in the celebration with lots of excitement and passion. The eagerly awaited event is celebrated each year with great energy and verve and brings in a lot of joy and happiness to the local community.
Dolchi Holi at Bikaner
Dolchi Holi is again a slightly different form of Holi celebrated primarily by the Harsh and Vyas communities of Rajasthan. The celebration involves people throwing water on each other in a specially made vessel called Dolchi, manufactured from the camel skin. Celebrating Holi in such a way is a part of the tradition which has been sustained for 300 years.
However, the water is thrown only on the back of the individual and not front. Nevertheless, what is surprising is that colors are not used in this Holi and it is played by men of the communities only, while women and children look over. It is said that the tradition of this Holi was started when the two communities had a dispute over food. In order to bury the hatchet, the men of the communities started throwing water on each other, which subsequently got converted into a tradition.
Celebrations by Royals
The erstwhile Royal community of Rajasthan have their own way to celebrate Holi with the locals. On this day, members of the royal family come out in their most dazzling attires and mingle with the commoners. Previously, the occasion was marked by the grand display of the equestrian skills by the royal princes.
Even to this day men of the royal family emerge out on their steeds and throw colors on each other as well as get drenched in water themselves. The general mood of festivity and gala surrounds everywhere and hold the entire city in its grips.
Elephant Festival in Jaipur
Another attraction which cannot be afforded to be missed during the occasion of Holi is the famous Elephant Festival. The occasion is characterized by a wonderful procession, carried off by elephants decorated with diverse and attractive embellishments like scarves, velvet pastorals, embroidered head-plates, anklets, gold embroidered rugs and ear danglers.
Since ancient times elephants make up an important part of the Indian Society and play an important role in the business of life of ordinary countrymen as well as royalty. The exquisitely decorated elephants are all taken through the lanes of Jaipur and their mahouts too avail this opportunity to dress themselves up in fine clothes and royal turbans.
The festival is organized by Rajasthan Tourism and draws a lot of roar and cheer from the locals as well as tourists. Various competitions like Elephant Race, Elephant Polo, tug of war between the elephant and 19 men and women are especially popular. In addition to the elephant procession, a parade of chariots, camels, palanquins and lancers on horses is also organized which keeps the audience indulgent and entertained.
The land of Maharajas, the fabled arena of legendary warriors and a haven of majestic forts, palaces and havelis, Rajasthan is a territory blessed with great history, amazing geography and an astonishing culture.
