The biggest party of the year isn’t the Oscars or the Grammys. It’s not in Cannes or Venice. It’s the Met Gala in New York—an event at which the world’s biggest stars come out to play.
In theory, the gala celebrates the opening of the annual summer fashion exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, but it’s grown to become a behemoth red carpet event like no other. Hosted by US Vogue’s Anna Wintour (head of the Costume Institute), the evening follows a strict theme every year, and half the fun lies in seeing what the invitees turn up in. Will they, like Sarah Jessica Parker in tartan at the 2006 AngloMania-inspired event, stay true to the theme? Or will they rebel in their own unique way, à la Emma Watson in Brit label Burberry at the 2010 Gala celebrating the ‘American Woman’?
Here’s a look at the most stunning looks spotted on the red carpet through the years:

2011: Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty
The Met Gala paid homage to the late designer one year after his untimely death with an exhibition that went on to become one of the museum’s most popular exhibits. So popular, in fact, that it was extended at the Met and then brought over to McQueen’s hometown, London, where it was housed at the V&A for nearly five months. Romanticism and sublimity were the twin pillars upon which McQueen’s creativity was based, executed with the confidence of a provocateur. Penelope Cruz was every inch the statuesque muse of the Romantics in a sweeping feathered Oscar de la Renta gown.
