It’s time for the globe’s biggest film and theatre faces to pull out their red carpet best: the 69th annual Cannes Film Festival kicked of on May 11, and has already showcased some very promising looks.
While Sonam Kapoor stepped out in an ivory sari-inspired Ralph & Russo, Anna Kendrick, Jessica Chastain and Amal Clooney met the shutterbugs in sunny shades of yellow by Stella McCartney, Armani Privé and Atelier Versace respectively. Eva Longoria followed her white Pamella Roland gown with a slinky black one by the same name, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan stood out for picking the most eye-catching make-up with each red carpet look.
Want to see more heart-stopping looks from the film festival? Stay tuned for daily updates!
Style spotting on the Promenade de la Croisette is the annual sport of the style aficionado. The 69th edition of Festival de Cannes is under way, and we have already started rounding up our favourite looks so far; and trend-spotting follows, naturally. We’ve identified the top five from the couture spotted on the Cannes red carpet:
Black is back
Julia Roberts in Armani
Or rather, it never went away. Doutzen Kroes’s cutout Brandon Maxwell number is nowhere near safe or boring. If there was a colour assigned to rebels, it’s black—Julia Roberts wore a classic-cut gown by Armani Privé, paired with no shoes. Kendall Jenner sported a sheer dress by Cavalli Couture that only highlighted the supermodel’s stature.
One would imagine a brick-a-brac shoot sked keeping Priyanka Chopra on her toes. Despite the many Instagrams ranging from script readings to precautionary first aid kits and enjoying Zac Efron’s brand of humour, Chopra’s mission to own American television’s prime-time spot remains undeterred. This week the star was spotted at the ABC Upfront show in Lincoln Centre, New York. Chopra performed to Bruno Mars’s “Uptown Funk” ending with a tribute to late musician Prince’s iconic “Kiss”. Chopra may not have been to a Bollywood dance rehearsal in months but she sure remembers a thing or two about putting the right foot forward. Watch it unfold here:
Rumour mills have been rife with reports about Salman Khan and Iulia Vantur's alleged affair since quite some time now and when Iulia was spotted with Salman and his family at the Mumbai Airport and Preity Zinta's wedding reception, it added more fuel to the fire.
We hear that Salman's ailing mum Salma Khan wants to see her son get married and now, Sallu has finally agreed. Grapevine has it that Khan will get married to his rumoured Romanian girlfriend on December 27, which also happens to be his 51st birthday.
Well if these reports are true, then this December surely will be a festive one for the 'Khan'daan.
After a star-studded wedding that had every Bollywood fan around the globe glued to their Instagram feeds for a week, newlyweds Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover are now detoxing and celebrating their first couple of days as man and wife in the Maldives. And by the looks of it, they’re having the time of their lives.
If you’re one with a weakness for endless seas, sunny skies and powdery beaches, the couple’s getaway is going to give you major honeymoon goals. There’s no missing the scrumptious desserts, hilariously cute towel art and of course, the bride’s fitter-than-fit bikini bod on Instagram. Take a look!
The much-anticipated international film festival by the French Riviera commenced this week, and as always, brought together the most renowned faces in the world who share the red carpet each year with their contemporaries.
While it is only just the beginning of the 69th annual Cannes Film Festival, there’s enough inspiration to take these red carpet beauty looks to your next night out. Here are some of our favourites:
Easy, breezyLoose strands, deliberate flyaways and natural curls make for the perfect fuss-free styles—like Victoria Beckham’s textured knot and Naomi Watts’ wavy bob.
Pony talesGloss up your hair and tie it up high into a severely sleek ponytail like Bella Hadid, or keep it casually elegant with a messy-with-a-purpose pony like Blake Lively’s.
Bold versus bareKristen Stewart’s intense, perfectly sculpted red lip paired with kohl-rimmed eyes, or Jessica Chastain’s soft peach lips with shimmer lids—choose your red carpet alter ego. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan matched her glossy nude lips with an electric blue eyeshadow, making her eyes the focus.
Crazy curls A big blowout with lots of movement will never go out of style. Take cue from Amal Clooney, who made wild waves look polished on the red carpet.
17 years at one of the world’s biggest international film festivals, 15 of them as L’Oréal Paris’ brand ambassador and two as a jury member, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan continues to reign at Cannes. One candid interview with the star and you’ll get acquainted with a side of her that she doesn’t often show on-screen. Under that flawless face, she’s a fierce multi-faceted personality with an even dynamic voice. She doesn’t boast, and her natural modesty is what sets her apart.
Bachchan speaks of everything from being a working mother, constantly being under the radar for her red carpet choices and her biopic Sarabjit that releases this month.
Vogue sits with her to know what it’s like being one of the world’s most beautiful women, an actor, a mother and everything in between… and not feeling the pressure of it all.
On going unconventional on the red carpet This year, for the 69th edition of Cannes Film Festival, Bachchan’s first appearance was in an Ali Younes gown, and she slayed and shimmered in that gold hand-beaded cape. But there’s one common element you might have noticed in her Cannes appearances: she’s always gravitated towards experimental make-up. This time, make-up artist Charlotte Willer gave her an almost-theatric electric blue eye and glossy nude lips, while hairstylist Stephane Lancien matched it with big, beautiful waves. And like every uncommon and unorthodox piece of work, it had its share of lovers and haters. To that, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan says, “I normally tend to lean towards palettes that are much softer, earthy tones, harmonious matches like a soft eye and bold lips, but when I come here, there’s always something new and different; the looks are very forward. They’re “risks”, but very fashionably done. And it takes experts to do that!”
On always being under the scanner 24/7 You’d think the intense pressure to always look perfect for a woman known to be the epitome of beauty might get to her, but Bachchan keeps herself rooted, “The fact that I belong to showbiz forever, playing dress up has become a way of life. I keep teasing everyone on how one day I’ll wear a white shirt and jeans to the red carpet! And just like art, the fashion choices you make work for some, and may not work for others. But it’s nice to have immensely talented and creative people to dress me up, or you’d see me in one avatar all the time.”
When it comes to making an appearance and choosing her couture piece for the day, she keeps it cool, “I don’t take it too seriously. I’m an actor by career choice, I enjoy fashion and treat it like art, and I have a life and family. I didn’t have time to look at all the sartorial choices that the fashion industry spoils me with as I was busy with promotions for Sarabjit, but few pieces I could go through have come handy. I just like to go with the flow and have fun with it. It doesn’t stress me out.”
On commercial versus serious cinema “It’s my choice. I chose to do this, just like if i wanted, I could always go for an easier path and choose to do a sure-shot blockbuster that will appeal to the masses. I am extremely proud of the movies I’ve done, and grateful to the audiences who’ve supported my choices. It is very liberating and reassures directors to approach me for this kind of cinema. But I’ve always been inclined towards work that has a message, and the message in Sarabjit is simple, of peace and hope. Through the story of a woman from a small town who despite struggling for over 20 years for justice continued trying. It’s the kind of resilience she had, that will teach you to never give up.”
On taking her daughter Aaradhaya to Cannes “She has my kind of built-in energy, she loves the experience, the colours, the people and the place. And now that she’s been here before, she remembers it all when she comes back. So each year when it’s time to come back, she recollects her Cannes moments and knows that it’s going to be that time of the year, our time together!”
TheCannes Film Festivalmay be amongst the world’s most important movie-related events. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t also a blast to be at. While the internet is exploding with flawless red carpet shots of attending stars, there’s a whole other Cannes album we’re crushing on right now: the behind-the-scenes moments.
From Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Richa Chadda’s star-studded selfie to Sonam Kapoor’s poolside party, this album is as action-packed as it gets. Don’t miss the shots of Blake Lively meeting fans with her gown slung over one arm, Julia Roberts and George Clooney cracking up over a private joke, and Victoria Beckham’s post-party chilling session with Eva Longoria. It’s clear these guy are having a great time.
